Hires fix is an automated img2img process anon. Lemme copypaste a little guide of stuff I do when I proompt locally.

Add "upscaler_for_img2img" to your quicksettings
Check "With img2img, do exactly the amount of steps the slider specifies (normally you'd do less with less denoising)." setting

Use img2img, type in the desired resolution manually (so if it's 2x from 512x512 it would be 1024x1024)
Choose the img2img upscaler, I suggest 4x-animesharp or remacri
Use 0.5-0.55 denoise if you want it to be detailed and ready to redo the upscale several times in case it spergs out, 0.35-0.45 if you want it to look more like initial gen but a bit undetailed

That's my usual upscale process on a9fed7c3. Reusing hires fix with the same seed is also an option but I feel like it gives you less control over upscaling and it kinda wastes time if you are a GPUlet.

Using img2img upscaling instead of hires fix also allows you to control the outputs better and change the prompt/negs/samplers. Recently I started doing SDE Karras lowres pics and upscaling with Euler A and I kinda enjoy the results

The process might be different on newest commits. Afaik you can do second-pass prompt for hires fix and there's a scale slider in img2img but the point still stands, you can upscale whatever you want in img2img
