Fate is popular because of its incredibly deep characters and amazing writing. The stories that have come out of the Fate franchise (especially those written by Nasu) have been universally praised for their profound themes and interesting character relationships. Many points of the original story have make a lasting effect on pop-culture especially in Japan, with things like unlimited blade works and gate of babylon becoming recognisable at the mere mention of their name.
