Nijisanji fans were known as cancer from long ago during the /jp/ times.
Most frequent doxxfags (i.e. publicly commenting about other chuuba's 中の人 in youtube comments) harassing and flaming other chuubas and even some of their own, and generally being extremely obnoxious all around.
Niji fans in /jp/ are the only ones to post number related posts, and usually in the tone of using their numbers to shit on other chuubas. But the climate was a lot more unified back then, so such things were dismissed as regular shitposting and not a pattern.
No biggie, Nijijp fans are dogshit, no hate to NijiJP livers themselves.
Hololive gains prominence, nijifans get a new target, look for any and all "yabs" to cut them down since they can't stand losing their #2 spot.
Aloe gets graduated by their doxxing and harassment campaign, but there were some parts of the HoloJP community that didn't like Aloe either at the time, so response was mixed (once this aspect was cleared up, the hatred simply reignited).
Nijisanji released a "we protect our talents" statement "coincidentally" at the same time, which was a flagrant attempt to shit on Hololive.
Funnily enough, Karma struck their asses with the whole Meiro thing just 2 months later, the fallout of which is STILL ongoing (Roa MIA).

At this point NijiJP fans are considered absolute dogshit. Some livers that do anti-hololive shit are also known and avoided (prominently Gundou).
NijiEN debuts, Lazufags come into the board spouting shit about their "chemistry" and how they're sooo much better than Myth, how Hololive feels too corporate and how NijiEN is more "authentic" etc. etc.
Annoying like flies, but simply an extension of the Nijisanji fanbase.
Selenfag appears, uses Selen to shitpost ITT over a period of 6 months (documented in the cope list).
Luxiem debuts, shitposts galore, "Vox passes X" becomes a regular catalog thread, sisters make their appearance ITT and once make it completely unusable for 2 hours with their shitposts.
Each such instance slowly builds resentment towards Nijisanji, until hatred against Nijisanji "fans" reaches a boiling point. Some livers such as Vox gain negative reputation due to their content as well, but it's mostly "live and let live" at this point, apart from the occasional shitposts and numberposting.

And then comes : All out war. An unprompted shitting on Hololive talents on a private Nijisanji server by Nijisanji Livers themselves.
Basically shredded any form of restraint or mental block that Hololive fans held towards Nijisanji and their fans.
Livers are no longer sacred from shitposting, anything they do can and will be used against them, graduations will be celebrated, yabs and mishaps will be laughed at. No one is safe.
They wanted all out war for over 2 years. They finally got it.
