There's so much of a focus on capitalistic ascendancy to demonstrate value and appreciation, but the internal satisfaction of completing a project you put 100% and hearing words of appreciation from those that truly respect your efforts is much better than selling out to write furry fanfics or peddle self-help books to 40+ year old wine aunts.

I've had this happen to me in my specific pursuits. I had to make a tumblr, a website, a blog, and cultivate somewhat of a fanbase. I didn't put too much stock into placating and drawing in the fanbase, but I busted ass on the website part, even though I was totally unfamiliar with it.
I'd advise you to stick out with the bullshit, and go for whatever requirements they demand. Worse case scenario, you walk away knowing it was them and not you. Best case scenario, you fulfill the dream.
But you don't want to put in all that effort only to be roadblocked by something you're unfamiliar with.
As for me, what I had in mind didn't play out. They rejected me on all fronts, some of them not even bothering to reply. Still, I'm glad I know I can definitively say I tried my best.
I can handle hating thise who rejected me becayse they didn't recognize my latent talent and thorough effort. I can't handle hating myself for not putting in the effort at the final step.
