There's way more to /m/ than Gundam despite it's size, especially when you actually think in terms of "/m/" content which also includes toku and sci-fi anime. It's a generalization like saying the shippers/horny posters are women. However, I think Axel's more boomer tastes brings in fans who are predominantly male, especially men from countries outside Japan. Remember, the early mecha industry was an arms race to be the dominant toy seller to boys.
