>People have, historically, complained that those moments get brushed aside for "lol lmao bandits". i can concede that being a preference thing
Perhaps I'm not getting my point through. The problem isn't that it is trying to be serious, and it's trying to have a dramatic introduction; the problem is that it's trying and failing, and as a result the introduction comes across as trite rather than impactful. Games like FE1 and Langrisser 1 have a rapid introduction that serves the purpose of a simpler game with a simpler story, hell, even FE8 still has a rapid introduction with the whole first chapter taking all of five minutes; whereas Engage has a very slow introduction placing a lot of weight on the death of a character who has only just been introduced and who spends as much time dying as they did breathing on-screen beforehand. You can compare it to something like Xenogears or Xenoblade 1 which also start off with a character's death setting the protagonist's quest in motion, but those games actually give you a decent amount of time to get to know the characters and feel invested in them and the setting before killing them off and expecting you to care.

You forgot Etie and "dude muscles", Alfred and "dude water", Alcryst and "dude I suck", to think of a few. Sure, there are ones that aren't like that, and the older games definitely also had a problem with it at times, but the support writing in Engage is a huge step backwards from Three Houses, which is probably why it's as annoying as it is.

>I'm not a very big fire emblem guy but I've heard that this game is more focused on the "gameplay" aspect rather than the social.
Compared to the previous game that's definitely true. I could talk about balance issues but this isn't really the place for it, I guess I can say that the combat animations are the best they've ever been so that's something anyone playing it could appreciate.
