The Hatsu Basho for January 2024 has concluded. Yokozuna Terunofuji claimed the top division yusho with a score of 13-2. Despite a rocky start in week 1 giving up two kinboshi, Terunofuji rallied back to win 8 straight matches including a playoff win against sekiwake Kotonowaka.

Although he fell short in his bid at the Emperor's Cup, Kotonowaka achieved the 33 wins over 3 basho necessary to be promoted to ozeki as well as the technique special prize. Former Sekiwake and current Maegashira 1e Wakamotoharu, who upset the yokozuna on Day 2 and beat Kotonowaka on Day 6, won the outstanding performance prize.

The Aki Basho for 2023 has concluded.

It came down to the wire with a playoff between ozeki Takakeisho and rookie Atamifuji. Takakeisho had a lot to prove coming into this basho as he was in danger of being demoted. Atamifuji initially debuted in the top division in 2022 with a disastrous 4-11 score. With his return to makuuchi, he was the sole leader going into the final day with 11 wins. However, he lost his final match against ex-ozeki Asanoyama, bringing him to the playoff. Ultimately Takakeisho prevailed and won the yusho. However, it was not without controversy as he appeared to utilize a henka move (considered unseemly, especially for someone of his status).

Is this the beginning of a new chapter in sumo? Takakeisho might be considered for the sport's highest rank of yokozuna with 1 more yusho. Atamifuji, though he lost this time, might have proven himself as a new top contender.

The Nagoya Basho has concluded. Sekiwake Hoshoryu (the nephew of former yokozuna Asashoryu) wins the yusho with a score of 12-3.

On day 15, Hoshoryu was matched up with blazing prospect Hakuoho, who had an equal score and was on the verge of making history. Had Hakuoho beaten Hoshoryu and won the subsequent play-off, he would've been the first top division rookie to win their debut basho in 109 years. Instead, Hoshoryu's craft and experience won the day, hurling Hakuoho to the clay with a uwatenage. Hoshoryu then fought and defeated scrappy veteran Hokutofuji in a play-off to win his first ever Emperor's Cup. With 33 wins in the last 3 basho and a yusho to his name, promotion to ozeki is near-guaranteed.
