Did a few quick tests comparing latent (top) vs 4x-animesharp (bottom), which is my favourite of the non-latent upscalers I've tried so far. If there's other ones you like I'd totally be down to try those too, not as another comparison image but just for using them personally here and there. I didn't curate the comparison pics at all either so some of them sort of suck
Latent definitely is more likely to mess up hands, especially when holding things is involved, but I prefer the way it does finer details / smaller objects, for example the leaves in the images on the right.
If the image composition can somehow hide the hands or I just get lucky with hands then I'll prefer latent, I usually only switch off it if it's messing up the image too much.
