I can't say I've ever had any issues? Scale has to be above 1, otherwise you shrink the image. The node should run more or less instantly, the slow part is the second sampler run to make the image actually look good. Here's a pic with an extremely barebones workflow if you wanted to try it to tell if the problem is being caused by something else

Or you can always just start with bigger empty latents, that works too. I'm curious to know if you've hit any upper limits where the image composition starts getting bad
