midsommar has some really good gore, especially when the one guy jumps off the cliff. FUN FACT: that old guy is the actor that inspired the 'bishounen' archetype. not a shoujo reader myself so i don't know exactly what the artistic lineage is, but yeah in his youth he looked like a bishounen jumped out of the page.

i think it captures its central conceit well, which is essentially how a cult can hijack your emotions. the part where the main girl is screaming and going through torment, and all the other girls are joining her is honestly... that moment is horror kino. it's crazy. it's crazy how like... they won't let her have her emotions. by partaking in it, by making it a group thing, you can see it unraveling her moment by moment, and it's terrifying. but it is the only exceptional part of the film.

the rest of the film feels kind of like a weird mix of if like... seinfeld or always sunny side characters got stuck in a horror movie. i do think it's funny. it really is. and some little things like the weird cultural ticks with period blood or whatever... it's creepy.

but overall the film is just kinda gross in a way that i dont quite like. the comedy... i dont know. the thing is. the comedy makes the movie quite watchable always. and weirdly relateable. but it feels like it's at strong friction somehow. there is definitely something there to how the black comedy distracts you from just how sinister the stuff happening on screen is, but it's also like... it really feels more like two films are happening at once. the main guy is a sitcom character, and the main girl is a real person. the sitcom shit makes the film fun to watch sometimes, but it takes any real emotion out of the main girl's struggles. and overall, because the main cast just actively asks you to laugh at them, you end the film with this really sour feeling like you just heard a really long dirty joke that ended with dead babies splashed on the wall.
