Renpy is very light on the coding. I have virtually no experience as well. The most you'll have to do is 'if statements'.
Looking over a completed project is probably too deep of waters to jump into at first. I'd recommend simply downloading Renpy.
There's a visual novel called Tutorial that comes preinstalled that teaches you in a very simple and friendly way the basics of the program (and the teacher is cute too!).
There's also a preinstalled visual novel called The Question that lays out the script in a very easy to read fashion. Poking and prodding The Question's script can be useful too.

I don't want to overwhelm you, bu as for looking at the code, a program called Editra gives thing colors for better visual clarity.
