Well that's true for the lovecraft genre.
But I mean like Lovecraft's own stories.
I haven't read a lot of them, but some of them were relatively small in scope. Like just people messing with things they shouldn't, or discovering some horrible atrocities that someone comitted.

Even in his zombie story its the clear the "monster" is the guy obsessed with trying to conquer death.
And he's not even terribly inhuman, at first at least, he's described like a nerdy kid that just wants to prove his genius to the people that don't respect him.
