Sonic Generations has the best modern gameplay even if a lot of fans hate the boosting. Classic Sonic feels off, but his spin-dash is broken. (Broke good, not broke bad.)
It's also the definitive entry for "fan service" when every level is a remixed version from Sonic's past. The idea was so good that they decided to do it again in Frontier's cyberspace levels.

If you're one of those nostalgia fags, a lot of people gush about Sonic Mania having the best classic gameplay.
It's not even made by Sonic Team, but by a team of dedicated fans who previously ported Sonic 1 to mobile. (The port is really good since I still have it on my phone.)

You'll never get another Adventure game because of everyone's reception to Sonic '06. Thankfully, some crazy bastard decided to rebuild the game from the ground up with better physics, quality of life changes, and enhanced mechanics that build upon the original. It's called Project '06, and you can download the PC version beta for free right now even if it currently only has Sonic and Shadow's story.

Then go play Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed. It's the best kart racer I've played even if it's not a Sonic game. Better than Mario Kart 8, but not better than Crash Team Racing. I personally competed in one of the tournaments because of how fun this racing game is.
