Not as many as former boy and girl bands from the US and UK

But that's the problem.
Idol culture in JP was seen as everything that was wrong about Western boy/girl bands pushed to the absolute extreme, with a lot more child abuse.
Perception only started to shift after K-pop and Volcaoid got a bit more mainstream in the late 2010s with Gen Zs.
