Mostly just being a bit of a Digimon fan and having played some of the games and being big into that Vital Bracelet thing. Just approach it the way people do Pokemon partners where it's not entirely aesthetics but also what represents someone. It's easy to say something like give Mouse Cutemon and evolve it into Marine Angemon cause they're pink and cutesy and she's pink and cutesy but that ignores the rest of her personality.
