Otsonny!! I enjoyed watching sonny in his SF6 training arc today, it was actually a really chill time. He's messed around with characters before but I don't think he's ever really spent proper time labbing on-stream in strive (or any fighting game), so even if this wasn't a super "eventful" stream it was a nice change of pace. First he came up with a list of things he wanted to work on— regiment, regimin, regimen, regime, sonny your ESL... regardless, once he had an idea of what to focus on for today, he pretty much just got to work in experimenting. Hope you like the white training box and ken's theme, because you're in for four hours of it. Apparently he's done all of ken's combo trials so we wouldn't see any of that, but with all the potential nuance of the six-button scheme he spent a lot of time just kind of figuring out frame data for attacks. Getting a feel for how the specials play with different attack strengths, startup, recovery, advantages... there's so much to consider, though i think I understand the frame meter a little better now. To add, this stream was honestly a pretty good learning experience for those who are newer to the game, I walked away with some new knowledge for myself even if I probably won't pick up ken anytime soon. In the beginning, he did have a bit of trouble staying on-task which was kind of funny, at one point he got sidetracked talking about his keybinds and even pulled out MS paint to create a diagram... and then gave a somewhat long-winded explanation about how he does super jumps on keyboard in strive. I'm sure it's not that uncommon but his setup seems a little unusual to me... using the arrows instead of wasd? I could never. Today we also saw a number of people show up who were clearly very knowledgeable about SF (even a self-proclaimed retired pro, sugoi) and I appreciate them essentially taking time to coach him and give advice on moves, combos, etc. since I think sonny really enjoys that sort of thing. It was funny when he'd basically have a 1-on-1 with any given chatter, again this caused some distraction but he did get somewhat better at multitasking as he kind of figured out what he wanted to hone in on. Sometimes he'd just stop to go look up combos/setups/whatever on twitter, if that gives you any better idea of what kind of vibe the stream had. I also discovered today how organized the hashtags are for this game, huh... too bad leddit shit the bed so it couldn't be of any use KEK. New vocab acquired: meaty, which can either be when you hit your opponent on the first frame of wakeup after a knockdown, or when you hit them in the last active frame of your attack ...yeah I prefer the japanese term "oki" for that one. Glad he could get a feel for them though. There were also cute moments even in a stream like this, like his reaction to discovering the potential of dragonlash and all the other stupid shit you can do in this game. Last hour was kinda just focused on a couple combos and "cunish pounters" (some very interesting spoonerisms from this man recently)... hp runstop cr lp target combo, jesas I feel like I've casted a spell by typing that out. You really gotta have good muscle memory for this shit, it was great when he finally got it though. Just the once, he ended stream after that. But now that he knows he CAN do it he can work on perfecting it. He's talked a little about how he sometimes fusses too much over little things but I say who gives a shit as long as he's having fun, style points really do matter most. Even so you could see a visible improvement (or at least see him learning in real time) from the start to the end of stream, and that was pretty satisfying to watch. But hey, this is all just against a standing ryu! Gotta put it in practice and see if his brain just turns off again when he fights CPUs or people. Next time... and in the meantime I'm sure he'll be playing some offstream too since he said he really likes the game so far. Good, I'm glad. Sonny will keep working to git gud at ken even if it's different from the anime fightan he's used to, and I'll do my best too. He wants to also try out juri and JP at some point, neither of which were really surprising to hear. Hopefully he can get more of EN to check SF6 out... cash prize incentive in a tourney might be a little much though. Ganbare! Thank you for the fun stream, and thank you to all the people who came out to give him advice, there was some entertaining discussion. I personally disagree that fighting game players are more "disciplined" than FPS or moba players, but I love you too sonny. Probably no stream later? No POV for nidhogg (1) on Wednesday? Regardless, I'll look forward to whenever I see you next. Good luck on your work taichou, sleep well and see you soon! o7
