They make shit music in an already shitty niche genre. They were never going to make it in a million years and neither would Mori if she kept grinding out in that space. Yeah Mori got a boost from Hololive, but that's also people coming for the Hololive brand name not just her music. Which is okay, its good enough to say that her success is deserved, yes it's bolstered by Hololive, but it's not absolute trash either. And surprise, turns out things are easier if you are a cute girl. Big whoop. To be fair, literally nobody thought EN was going to be good and many people have recanted since, myself among them. It's the same with Ame's debut stream, yeah you love the girls now and have rose tinted glasses over all the things they do, but at the time, we all expected it to be 4Kids dub tier cringe. Just taking a look at the other "English VTubers" that were around back then, and the majority that are around now, you really can't blame people for having low or no expectations. MAYMAYMAY is a good example of what we were expecting. Hell the ENs themselves weren't expecting much, they've all said so, and even if they hadn't it was obvious by their goals of things like 100k eventually. CN and ID had already spun off and been pretty mediocre(inb4 angry SEAniggers), there was no reason at all to think EN would be good, let alone great. Hindsight is 20/20, but I think expecting them to be shit not only made sense, but also freed them up a bit from the expectations that would normally fall on any JP Gen, like how Gen 4 and 5 will always be compared to 3 and how EN 2 is currently suffering.

Again, I thought EN would suck and I was wrong, but I don't think I, or most people, were wrong to have that expectation given what we had.
