I thought about island once, but I feel it needs to be a land empire, with access to the sea of course

this sounds fine to me.
At least in my mind I associate archipelagos with small threads that are kinda weak in presence and resources. In reality Phase is strong, and at least in 4chins, it often rivals the strength of Niji and Holo when it comes to presence, posting speed, soundpost production, memes, etc.
