Yeah XL models were trained with higher quality so it tends to pick up small details better. It does suffer on the background front though (getting better with LoRAs)

Try adding IP adapter for the face, it can help with consistency a lot. Not sure if there are better stuff now but when I used it before Sparse cntrolnet were great for consistency with high-denoise.
