Yep to avoid them shitting the bed you need to at least go over 0.5 denoise, and sometimes they just refuse to work below 0.55, so looking for good seeds before upscaling becomes kinda pointless, but since recently I've mostly been letting the wildcards go while I do something else it's been working out pretty well for me

Yeah latent upscalers, especially nearest-exact, add a lot of fine detail (and some of that could become nonsense) so they're definitely not suited for all styles, I'd imagine it would work the worst on simplistic or flat styles
