Mayhaps I am autistic and can't empathize with most people, but that doesn't make me wrong, and in fact I'm not wrong and I'm not that autistic. I watch plenty of shows with characters that are developed well just most of them aren't anime. Channel 4's Utopia has been one of my favorite pieces of media since I found it in late 2015. Barry also comes to mind along with Fleabag. Those all fit your definition of a show with supposedly well developed characters. Yes they're good on a technical level, there's obvious skills and care put into the writing and presentation to tell you about a character clearly and with nuance. I get it and I appreciate it, but Riverdale objectively more entertaining to me. I don't care of it's literal schlock nonsense, I have a good time watching it and it doesn't make me sad. I get sad very easily and I'd rather just not feel sad if I don't need to. I cried equal amounts when I saw the future children on the tree of kings in The Northman as when Pepper pots flew on screen to help Tony in Avengers Endgame. Barry makes me dramatically uncomfortable extremely often, I have to watch it while running on a treadmill or I'll ball up into the fetal position. Tropes exist for a reason and that reason is easy interpretability, they're standard and comfy and I enjoy that because I'd rather not have night terrors but I still want more action than what Little House On The Prairie can give me.
