Absolutely, Clannad is literally a nakige Visual Novel. Every character's route just involves injecting random sad scenes and making the heroines suffer for the sake of making the player cry.
Doesn't make it a bad series because at least it takes the time to develop all of those characters and hints their traumas(in the VN at least, not so much the anime) but it's definitely very melodramatic when it jumps from happy to sad so quickly and with no warning for no reason other than milking tears. I think modern VN's were influenced a bit too much by Key visual novels so unfortunately a lot of series are like that these days being very bipolar all the time.
