>root canal and a crown
Technically, you are right, but let's translate it into simple words. Although, don't read if you don't understand the process for your own good.
A tooth is an organ with blood flow and nerves. A root canal means that you killed of blood supply and nerve connection. What's left is essentially the dead carcass of your previously alive organ. Without nerves, you don't feel the amount of pressure on the tooth, so it's more susceptible to mechanical damage.
Installation of a crown requires removal of a huge part of a tooth higher than your gums.
In the end, you essentially got an implant, but with a dead tooth as a base instead of screws into your jaw or bridge. That's Nurgle tier of "saved tooth".
