i don't remember if he's brought them up specifically but one of his favorite anime is mushishi, which has a similar vibe to natsume? it's because he was writing about a deity who will extend your lifespan in exchange for a good story, but after you die he owns your soul. the first part made me think of xxxholic and the second part reminded me of the book of friends.
