During the Age of Gold the gods and demigods lived with the rule of the Erdtree and the Elden Ring.
Until one night a betrayal took place and the Rune of Death was stolen by the Witch Ranni, daughter of the goddess Marika and king consort Radagon.

The Rune of Death was then transposed to daggers in a ritual allowed in it to be used as a weapon to kill the demigods. Godwyn the golden was ritually sacrificed using these blades.

Soon after the Elden Ring was shattered and thus began a war for control between gods and demigods.

The game hands you the role of a Tarnished, given grace by the Erdtree and on a mission to restore the ELDEN RING and become Elden Lord by the Greater Will and their servant fingers.

Huge spoiler
The Erdtree, the Greater Will, the Scarlet Rot, the Blood are all ancient alien gods. Souls of the living are forever recycled through the aeons to fuel the Erdtree and are thus trapped for eternity in an unending cycle of rebirth and servitude.
