The earliest stuff wasn't so different from Fleischer Bros. really. As much as the Snow White thing is true, there are JP illustrations from before WWII (and before Snow White) that have elements of manga stylization. Those illustrations are rooted in both the Western and ukiyo-e traditions, and I think they filtered down into manga and later anime.
