I personally found that it's easier to avoid getting hit by using Bible without caring for positioning. Throw in duplicator for more books, knife+bracer for faster spin and strongest directional pushback for bosses, axe+candle for bigger circle and additional pushback and you get a circle that nothing besides Reaper can enter. And you have 3 more slots to do some more funny stuff. There's a lot of things you can build purely for fun on top of that like making pentagram actually work or build some funnier weapons like pigeons/phineggae and keep entire screen clear until last minute.

Knives, lightning and axe is good way to clear a path for you while also getting things off your ass. I just never saw whip do much compared to other weapons both in gameplay and in the final statistics.
