Convoluted is the wrong way to look at it. It just needs to be striking or memorable. Take a look at picrel, where we have an extremely visually striking design for all intents and purposes, but what would make it convoluted? He has:
>Long red hair
>A lean frame
>Red Eyes
He's wearing:
>A black vest with some fur on the shoulders
>Red pants
>White shoes

Nothing here is so visually cluttered that you need hours to parse out what you're looking at, but he is absolutely a design that any and all fans will immediately recognize, and passerbies can definitely recognize that it's more than just streetwear (even if he's ultimately just wearing streetwear). You can do simple and striking, but you need to understand the value of color combinations and what kind of design you actually want out of your model.
