History books paint often a pretty hellish but biased representation of the middle-age, as they mostly show the rougher times of famine or war.
Of course sending someone from current year to the middle age would be horrible for them since they're used to live with our commodities, but people born at that type weren't particularly less happy than the average person nowadays.

Like there plenty of chances to enjoy life even for a simple peasant. Historians reported that peasant living in medieval times had more spare time then an average worker today, they would stop when it was counterproductive to do more, while it's pretty common nowadays to overwork people even when it harms their health and thus final result.
An average person would live under threat of famine for about 3 years of his lifetime at most. If you survived early childhood, you had a good chance to live at least until you were 60.

There were festivals and celebrations going on and most people went trough life a little drunk all the time, since beer was preferred to water. So, all things considered, they were probably not much unhappier than people today.
