The kikiramples earlier about dropping games made me reflect a bit and the Touhou series playthrough is something I found a shame because I felt she never got to the really good ones. ZUN really iterated the quality of life stuff with every single title (better and clearer focus mode, point of collection, clearer visuals) and compared to that the old ones feel really rough. As well as some subjective improvements in him getting more experienced as a composer and on what makes certain stages, and spell cards 'fun'. The gimmicks and mini-objectives are always kind of experimental mechanic but usually pretty fun to figure out.
