I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. I'm sure Kiara spent thousands of hours grinding her vocab flash cards and listening to things in Japanese, and it shows. She has a native-like ability in the Japanese language.
This is what causes so many problems -- her total inability to interact in a (Japanese) culturally-acceptable way is made 10,000 times more painful because there's no language barrier to blame it on. She should have picked up on these things by now, but she has not.
