This is incorrect. Mel wasn't originally part of Gen 1, she was a non-gen like Roboco. That's why she debuted weeks before the other Gen 1 members. When Chris was erased from existence, Mel was added to Gen 1 to maintain the 5 member dynamic.

Before the whole thing with Chris imploded, Mel was to join as part of the nebulous Non-Gen/0Gen alongside Sora and Roboco. Mel debuting weeks ahead of the rest of her Genmates shows how separated her introduction was to be and thus their wa a 11th hour change of plans after the fiasco with Chris blew up in Cover's face.
