a quick primer on the real old ass fire emblem games (the cutoff point for what i refer to as old ages me somewhat):

>Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light (FE1) on NES
somewhat archaic and clunky, but perfectly serviceable. has aged well overall outside of inventory management, which isn't the end of the world. not surpassed by either of its remakes and worth playing before them. shadow dragon on DS is particularly bad on top of being startlingly ugly.

>Fire Emblem Gaiden (FE2) on NES
think of it like the zelda 2 of fire emblem. dramatically altered many mechanics from the first game but still very good. it does, however, have a nearly perfect remake (fire emblem echoes: shadows of valentia) that retains everything good about it and is probably worth playing instead.

>Mystery of the Emblem (FE3) on SNES
an abridged remake of FE1 that also features a sequel story as a second campaign. the most popular fire emblem game in japan, but some of the changes it makes to FE1 are not what i would call positive ones...

>Genealogy of the Holy War (FE4) on SNES
notably unique fire emblem game featuring multi-objective maps that can be lengthy outings. allows you to save after every turn. a two part story of a grand crusade and the children of those crusaders taking up the mantle of their parents years later to save the world from a child sacrificing death cult. excellent game, but should be approached with caution and not as someone's first fire emblem game.

>Thracia 776 (FE5) on SNES
a midquel story featuring a handful of characters from genealogy of the holy war but with mechanics more reminiscent of what would come to be the series standard. an absolutely brilliant game and the last one to be helmed by series creator shouzou kaga. one of if not the best games in the series, but should probably not be someone's first fire emblem game due to its high level of difficulty.

i'd say more but i don't want to write a fucking novel about fire emblem in a kronii general. also yeah look into the gba ones and path of radiance if you can too.

fire emblem echoes is as 1:1 with gaiden as a remake can get, with probably the best art direction and presentation the series has had or likely will ever have. whether they'll ever actually make a new good game remains to be seen, but you can't deny that they have the capacity to whenever their head is out of their ass.
