Probably part of why I'm not a corpo person. Seeing borderline randos doing their own thing can be way more fun after cutting through the chaff of any metagaming or FOTMs. A chuuba that *only* plays kusoge and abandonware for MS-DOS or PS1 like early vinesauce would be numbers suicide, but there's still a market at smaller scale.

If you want an "IRC with persistent messages & files" that isn't Slack or Discord, then yeah Element/Matrix will work. In my opinion, XMPP does this better, but see below.

If you also want 1-on-1 voice calling, then it's certainly better supported than XMPP (massive fragmentation that's slow & steadily getting fixed after a literal decade of neglect because Google/Facebook) or Slack (no calls until 2021 lol) in that area. Might work alright.

Group (video) calls? Yeah you're f*cked, hope they all know how to use Mumble or just use Zoom and wait 5 more years for the possibility that Jitsi gets marginally less janky while seething about Google Hangouts being killed off.
