I've actually been to a peat bog before for an ecology course. The ground was covered in a super thick layer of soft peat moss and nothing else, which is really comfy to walk on as long as it's not too wet. It actually grows on top of each other to form these giant bumps over time. It was full of tall black spruce trees spaced more than an arms length away from each other without any branches in the way, so you could actually jog through it. The canopy blocked out 99% of sunlight, and combined with the soggy ground it was like walking into an instant night time chill. It was a really nice place.
My professor actually recalled a story she heard of someone in the department ages ago that went out to this exact bog with Tolkein himself while he was writing one of the LOTR books to research settings. It sort of looked like this but much darker.

I guess I am that guy that's interested in peat bogs.
