It takes some fiddling and getting used to, but my original "pastel" style has been dead for close to a year now, so I've come to terms with that.

On Illustrious/Noob? I'd recommend using a finetune built on Noob 1.1 EPS, should be fairly stable with colors.
V-pred is better on paper but it is more fiddly.

That's how it was from 1.5 to Pony, and from early Pony to late Pony/XL hybrids. I was one of the last to switch from 1.5 to Pony.
Early Illustrious was rough but I think we're already at the point Noob finetunes beat Pony in most situations.
