Ask anyone who knows anything about idols and they will tell you the difference between an idol and a normal musician is that you watch idols to see them improve.
The small indie experience is very akin to the idol experience: you are willing to watch someone who isn't there "yet" with the hope that someday they will "make it"

Assuming they are just not someone looking to groom an anime gf, I think that to a regular viewer is not as important if you are trained as the fact that you begin your training right there, with them.
They want to cheer you on your way to the top, even if you start on the bottom.
People do forget but Nina did not start where she is now: she is a turbo tryhard and practices her songs to no end. She got better and she is getting exponentially better every iteration. Nina is the ultimate western idol because she is a monster of progress and self superation. There are others like her and those are the ones I support the most, even if they don't sing at all.

Better not to make chuuba self-conscious anyway. Sing, and I will be there if I can. Simple as. If you are outright awful I just cut the volume in half.
My first jp indie chuuba had this horrendous mic that made killer screech every time she sang, but I kept going even if my ears bled. So don't worry, I'm used to worse.
