It was done not to compare Holos and Nijis (because that's not possible due to the massive number of low ranked talent pulling their average down) but to show HOW MASSIVE was the impact of their summer, starting with Salome debut and passing through their tournament arcs, graduation arcs culminating with Koshien 2022 massive numbers.
Nijisanji average (even having 100+ talent) rose from around 3.3k right before Salome debut and peaked at 5.3k after Koshien finals and the last episode of Fuwa Ratio Taisou.

One of the most amusing things is that Holos met "force with force" by inclining at the same rate Nijis inclined in the period and, here is the funny thing

Here is some speculation based on nothing but the voices in my head and some circumstantial evidences: there is this theory that Salome ended up bringing a whole new audience to vtubers (and she did) and that they might have ended up on Hololive because of a failure in branding by Nijisanji management.

it might just be what really happened: the JP vtuber sphere got wider and Hololive "sucked in" many of those new to the hobby.
