I suppose it’s not the worst civilization-defining landscape

More or less! My idea is that /vnug/ has developed different sources of magic depending on the intended use!
>magical essential oil vapor
The original form of magic, coming from evaporation from galewort plants. It’s the weakest in terms of intensity, which is why earliest forms of /vnug/ magic were all about manipulating senses and bodily functions, since the magic only has to give the targets a little push for their own body to do the rest
>herbal medicine
Made by drying up the plants. The overall intensity is similar, but the effect lasts longer due to the whole plant being present. It’s how traditional /vnug/ medicine works.
>magical essential oil
Made by extracting the magical juice from the plants. As concentrate they are more powerful, and their effects are more stable than their natural counterparts. /vnug/ field magic users usually carry a belt of vials with this stuff as “magic slots”. Can also be converted back into vapor through specific devices for medicinal and recreational uses.
>magical crystal
Solid magical material made by crystallizing magical essential oil, sometimes with ground magical gemstone mixed in. They are denser than liquid or gas so they contain more magic to be used, although they can be harder to trigger than them because of their stronger structure. Serious /vnug/ combat magic is usually powered by this.
>magical gemstone
The only /vnug/ magical source that doesn’t come from plants, instead from natural gemstones with trace magical elements mixed in. Of all the magical materials they have the highest density of magic, but they’re also the hardest to trigger. In the past they were either ground up to fortify magical crystal and magical essential oil (doing the latter might be how they discovered the crystallization process in the first place) or to get hit by magic to “ignite” them but recent tech development allows /vnug/ artificers to invent instruments that can trigger magical gemstones by themselves, expending the magic quickly or over a long period of time
