Every time I've had sleep paralysis has been nearly identical. It's always when I'm sleeping while lying on my back, never on my side or stomach. My eyes open in the middle of the night, and it's pitch black, and I know something is in the room with me. I can't see it, usually, unless my HPPD is acting up, but I know it's there for certain, somehow. And I cannot move at all. I can visualize moving my arms or turning my head, I can imagine it and imagine how it would feel to do it, but my arm never actually moves. It's like the part of my brain that initiates the signal to move is working, but the part of my brain that actually sends that signal down the nerve is still asleep. It's hard to judge time in this state, but I imagine it rarely lasts more than a few minutes before my arm suddenly jerks and I have control of myself again.

Usually, that's the end of it, but sometimes, as I'm trying to go back to sleep, I start to hallucinate sounds. I'm not actually hearing them, but it's as if my brain is really anxious to get back to dreaming, and starts the dreaming process before I lose consciousness.
