You do not need to concern yourself with how they actually work, all you need to do is incorporate the design elements, such as being padded for comfort and having metal loops for attaching things.

Other than that, you can go pretty wild, and even go for something more resembling a piece of armor.
You can have comedy props attached to them rather than cargo, or something purely decorative like a bell or a ribbon.

Paying homage should not restrain you, take inspiration but stay creative.
