Looking at male vtubers who made it on their own, I think you have to actually be gay (or good at acting gay), have a nice voice, and actually be somewhat entertaining to have any chance of becoming successful. Both Shoto and MurderCrumpet fit this criteria, and are some of the biggest 4view male Twitch indies. But there's also exceptions like Kenji who makes Zoomer videos, and Lord Aethelstan who is entertaining enough to get most of his girlfriend Nyanner's audience to watch him when he streams.
