Because in the case of Stars they get to keep most of the profits (I know this applies to bday/anni merch).They use their own money to make/manufacture these items without company backing so every yen they make is theirs to keep. (which is why it takes months to actually ship out after the PO period.)

So instead of SCing $100 where the vtuber gets maybe $40 might as well spend $100 getting their merch and theyll get a majority of that minus production costs.
