How their real friendship developed was not perfect but it is a good story.
And lore wise, it works so well. Their long history, their feuding and fighting, still being protective of each other if it was someone else trying to hurt them, Kiara learning to respect death (How nearly everyone else only does get one go) and Mori learning to appreciate life (Seeing Kiara fight to protect others even if death will still come someday.) Throughout all of history's ups and downs and the world's changes, these two are familiar to each other.

The fake romance/tsundere act was awkward for them both in the beginning. As we came to learn, Mori didn't even like pretending to be rude to a friend.
Their real dynamic as friends with similar experiences, but different personalities, all cloaked in a layer of playing with lore, is vastly better. And the art will never stop being good.
