Money does not have inherent value, it's a proxy to indicate how much time, effort and interest you are willing to put to acquire goods and services.
Could be (and has been for certain people) just a big rock in the middle of the village.

That's it. There is no inherent value in the rock (or in the concept of money in general), it is just a proxy, a way to create a "ledger" of time, effort and interest.

Fiat money tho, which is the basis of present day econony, that has inherent value because it is mostly disconnected from the objects mentioned above and can be created at a whim AND (in case of legal tender) is the only accepted currency by most governments when they come collect taxes.
