I have lived this way for about a decade. I find a project for about six months that pays well and then spend 6-12 months doing absolutely nothing.
I wouldn't really call it a NEET lifestyle, as it requires you to go in and out of it in order to sustain yourself.
Just be very responsible with your finances and you might be able to make this lifestyle work.
