For some specifics, points are based on card combinations (such as 3 same colored poetry ribbons or 3 animals), with the "brights" being the big ticket items. Brights are suit cards with special images on them, being the Phoenix, Crane, Moon, and Sakura Curtain. There's also Rain Man which counts as a Bright only if you have the other 4, and the Sake Cup, which can add bonuses to other sets.
The biggest element of the game though is when to call KoiKoi (keep going) and when not to. Whenever you complete a hand worth points, you have the option to end the game, or keep going for more points. However, only the player who ends the game gets to keep their points.
If, for instance, you rack up a large hand, but you keep going, and then your opponent gets a hand worth a single point, they can end the game, negating your entire hand. So knowing when to end the hand, and when you can keep going without your opponent interfering is key.
