I've been to both and they are not that hard of an experience.
It's just that, usually the guys that go there are weak minded an fearful most of the time.
In the military there were a lot of faggy insecure dudes who were lost in the world and joined the military for structure. As they were hardened by the experiences there, they became more stern and stoic, in my case, I could not give much of a fuck, didn't really care being there and found everyone dumb, after my service, I felt no change whatsoever in my life.
As in my jail experience I was caught dealing MJ in college, I was in jail 2 months, not much really, but it was mostly boring.
It was almost the same as in the military, but instead of becoming more manly the boys became a bit more deranged and deviant. Still I had not much time to analyze their behavior, just some of the fresh men.
It's a pain to deal with them to be honest, the more ignorant they are the louder and more incoherent their ramblings are, man I hate ignorant people.

But yeah, most of what people call "REAL LIFE" is just us humans being weak and dumb about stuff.
Instead of complaining about your insecurities seek to improve yourself and become of stronger character. You will see that "hardships" are really just obstacles or daily stuff you learn to get over of.

I've seen military vets and hardened criminals absolutely fucking lose it when their wife/gf cheats on them
Weak minded and poor maintenance of their relationship lead them to that outcome, if not that, their partner was poorly chosen, most of the time this happens due to the your fault for being desperate enough for company that you form a relationship with unstable people.
