You have to roleplay your ass off in every possible way you can to force the dice to become as irrelevant as possible, if you have bad luck.
In my D&D 5e sessions back in the day when colleges were open, I would roleplay my Ranger as a hardcore dirty fighter to offset the Ranger class' terrible base abilities. Shit like bringing manacles with me into combat to slap them onto the enemy's wrists to inhibit them, specifying that my arrows were aiming for eyes and tendons with my arrow shots to try and disable them, dealing crushing damage blows to kneecaps to force them down, coat their walking space with ball bearings to slip them up, etc.
You have to RP like a GOD to let your DM be okay with a lot of it, but you can do it.
