If you are a Japanese man that is lonely, that cut off his entire family and is basically just slowly dying in front of his computer screen your fantasies about an idol loving you or whatever are all you have. If she lets you down you already are a man with nothing to lose, there is no bigger danger to society or said idol. They tolerate shit like Rent a Girlfriend because the simp-incel cycle is so inherently Japanese. I could go on and on about this topic because it is so fascinating but to summarize the Japanese are now reaping the consequences of an immense economic boom in the '80s and '90s, they are being overworked to death and are expected to not mind, while most men and women did accept their societal gender roles (men provide for the family, women nurture the family), more and more men became unable to keep up with the pressure of making it big like their dad or grandpa did back in the '80s, leading to virgin hikkis, and more and more women find most men to be inadequate, leading to them entering the workforce, leading to a lot of wealthy aging boomers, the very few "well-adjusted" are the only ones having kids, etc.

The "unicorns" here are mostly just LARPing even if they spend thousands on a whore like Mikeneko.
